xAI Is Now SpaceXAI, and I Have Feelings About It

IndustryOpinionGrok

On July 6, xAI rebranded to SpaceXAI. New logo, new X handle, every product folded under the new name, Grok included. The next morning, SPCX joined the Nasdaq-100.

That running order is the tell. This wasn't a branding exercise, it was a capital-markets exercise. Bolt the AI lab onto the rocket company, and the index inclusion, the narrative, and the valuation all come along for the ride.

The product angle everyone missed

Underneath the rebrand, Grok 4.5 shipped as an enterprise model, tuned for coding and agentic work, leaning hard on the Cursor acquisition. That's a genuine strategic shift. Grok started life as the edgy consumer chatbot that would say rude things for a laugh. Now it's chasing the same enterprise agent budget as Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6. And, increasingly, the open-weight Chinese models that hand the whole thing over for a fraction of the price.

Which, weirdly, means every major lab is now selling the same product. Agents that do work. Not chat. Work.

What this means for a small business

Consolidation changes pricing power. When the AI lab is a line item inside a rocket-and-satellite conglomerate, it can subsidise tokens for strategic reasons, the way Google shoved Gemini into everything at a loss. More subsidised frontier compute is good for you, the buyer. Right up until the strategy changes and it isn't.

So our advice holds. Use the good cheap tokens while they're cheap, keep your workflows portable, and never build your business on the assumption that any lab's pricing, or name, will look the same in a year. This month settled the name part.

AI, Pushed to Work.
